River Fishing Equipment – Must Have Gear For Fishing In Rivers
When it comes to river fishing, there is one style of fishing that comes to my mind above all others and that style of fishing is wade fishing. To me river fishing has always meant fishing in a river while wading and in this article I will outline a few pieces of "must have" river fishing equipment for river fishing while wading in the water that you are fishing.
Some of the gear may seem obvious, some not so obvious, but the point is that if you want to be comfortable and effective while wading in the river that you are fishing all of this gear should be a part of your arsenal.
It's important to remember that you "get what you pay for" when it comes to river fishing equipment, so buying the cheapest equipment is never a good idea. A good rule of thumb is to buy equipment that is in the middle of the price range for whatever piece of river fishing equipment that you are in the market for. For example, if you are in looking for a pair of waders stay away from both the $99 and/or $500 pair of waders. A good price point would be between $150 and $300. This way you get a quality pair of waders that will last a long time, without "breaking the bank" on something you just don't need.
With that being said, a quality pair of waders is the first piece of equipment that you need to have to fish in rivers effectively. As I just said you don't want to buy the least expensive waders that you can find and waders at the top end of the price range aren't at all necessary either. You can get a quality pair of waders that will last you a very long time for $150 to $300 dollars. There are only two types of waders that you want to consider when looking for waders for river fishing; breathable waders or neoprene waders. You can choose which material will work best for your particular climate and fishing conditions, but either neoprene or breathable waders are the only way to go when it comes to this integral piece of river fishing equipment.
The next piece of equipment that I want to discuss is a bait carrier for those of you who like to fish in rivers with live bait. Carrying bait while wading can be a challenge to say the least. For example if you want to fish with live worms and are going to be wading, most anglers simply put the Styrofoam container that the worms are purchased in into a pocket of their fishing vest or I've even seen anglers dump their live worms into an empty pocket of their fishing vest in order to carry them while wading. While both of the methods may "work" they are by no means the best way to carry live worms while river fishing, a bait bag is. This unique piece of river fishing equipment clips to your fishing vest and carries your live worms while you are wading. If you like to use live minnows while river fishing and wading a quick minnow bait carrier is great for carrying live minnows.
The final piece of river fishing equipment that every wading angler "must have" is a fishing vest. Although often thought of as fly fishing vests a fishing vest is a must for spin fishermen as well. A fishing vest is literally a tackle box that you carry on your back and is integral to wading and fishing in rivers. The bottom line is that the aforementioned river fishing equipment needs to be a part of any serious wading fisherman's repertoire, there's no doubt about it.
